1916 Born in Brooklyn, NY
1933-1937 Earns a Bachlor of Business Administration, with a Teaching Certificate, from the College of Business and Accounting of the City College of New York (now known as Baruch College). At CCNY, is credited as student most responsible for securing readmission of women.
1937-? Works for Coty Cosmetics in Manhattan.
1939 Attends NYS Communist Party summer school.
1940 Begins teaching business accounting at Central Commercial High School in Manhattan. Active in the Teachers Union of NY.
Late 1940s Joined the Photo League of NY, taking classes in documentary and street photography.
Late '40s/Early '50s Begins working as staff photographer for the Teacher News, the publication of the Teachers' Union.
1953 Suspended as teacher after refusing to answer part of the Superintendent's question concerning past and present membership in the CP.
1953 Named as a former Communist at HUAC hearing in NYC
1954 Dismissed as a teacher by the Board of Education of NYC
1955 Appeal of dismissal denied by the State Commissioner of Education
1955 Two photographs included the Family of Man exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art, NYC
1955 Begins working as a free-lance photographer, commencing a long-standing relationship with the Hotel Workers Local #5 in NYC
1957 Meets Dr. M. L. King, Jr. at the office of the Hotel Workers Local #5 in NYC
1958 Marries Motel "Mark" Berkowitz, a Holocaust survivor from Poland
1960 Winner in America's Many Faces, sponsored by the National Urban League
1965 Travels to Poland with Mark
1966 Wins a Polish competition with "Strike Rally"
1967 Feinberg Law considered unconstitutional by Supreme Court. Grossman leads a group of teachers seeking reinstatement
1968 Participates in Poor People's Campaign, contributes photos to The New Movement: Power for the Powerless (ed. Karen Kerpen)
1971 Working as free-lance photographer, social worker, teacher of photog
1972 Teachers sue Board of Education for reinstatement
1973 Teachers are reinstated, receive NYCLU Florina Lasker Civil Liberties Award from the NYC Human Rights Commission.
1974- 1975 Substitute teaches at Central Commercial High School (now Norman Thomas High School)
1977 Heads tenant union in her building
1988 Dies of cancer
