Short Description of Collection

This collection contains a multitude of materials written by Ferdinand C. Latrobe and relating to Mr. Latrobe. Latrobe was Mayor of Baltimore for seven terms, spanning the last quarter of the nineteenth century. Latrobe was active in Maryland politics and also served in the Maryland House of Delegates for several terms throughout his career. This collection contains materials ranging from personal essays Mr. Latrobe wrote when he was a schoolboy to correspondence during his terms as Mayor of Baltimore. He was an avid recorder of his daily life, which is contained in twenty-four full diaries. The diaries date from 1888 to the year of his death, 1911, the only diary that is incomplete. There are as many other journals where Latrobe recorded accounts, memos, daily appointments, and notes and figures. There are many documents concerning a dispute between locomotive engineers, Ross Winans and Henry Tyson, in 1856 and 1857. None of these documents are dated but the dispute has been well-documented by historians of the railroad industry. The collection of the papers and diaries of Ferdinand Latrobe span a great part of his life and are well-fitted for many research interests. Mr. Latrobe had many interests, history, philanthropy, hunting, dog-breeding, music, and the improvement of the city of Baltimore. All of these subjects and more can be found in the collection.

In collaboration with the Maryland Digital Cultural Heritage (MDCH) program at the State Learning Resources Center and Enoch Pratt Free Library, selections from the Ferdinand C. Latrobe papers are currently being digitized. Latrobe’s hand-written speeches are now available on the MDCH website.
