Short Description of Collection
The Records of the American Society for Cell Biology (ASCB) 1960–1994 document the history of the society beginning with the organization led by Keith R. Porter and the first Annual Meeting held in Chicago in 1961. The early development of the organization including its partnership with Rockefeller Institute in the publication of the Journal of Cell Biology is also described. The correspondence, meeting minutes, agendas, reports, accounting and membership files provide a clear view of the growth and expansion that led ASCB to open a National Office and begin publishing a newsletter (1978) and the Journal of Cell Regulation (1987). Extensive meeting and committee files such as the Education Committee, the Public Policy Committee, the Minorities Affairs Committee, and the Women in Cell Biology Committee illustrate the development of society interests and activities. Records are organized along the lines of the Society’s committee structure: National Office, Meetings, Publications, Public Policy, and Committees.
