  • Sample Assignment for Biology-Evolution FYS

    Compare arguments against the theory of evolution from before 1950 with those after 1995.

    Requirements:

    1. Use both print and electronic resources and include at least two articles from scholarly periodicals, one book, and a web page (free Internet website).
    2. Briefly categorize the authors of each of your sources (scientist reporting experimental results, historian, individual expressing opinion, etc.) even if the exact name of the author is unknown.
  • Sample Assignments for English 100 and various First Year Seminars
    • Nobel Peace Prize Nomination: Nominate someone or a group for the Noble Peace Prize. Learn about the prize, the jury, etc. Justify the nominations.
    • Viewpoint of a Culture/Country: Find newspaper/periodical articles representing views on an event or issue from different cultures/countries. Identify different perspectives of this event/issue that are in operation in different cultures, and try to find out why.
  • Sample Assignments for History
    • History Source Criticism: Choose a well-known history book or historical school source (Marxist, Feminist, or Radical historiography, Diplomatic History etc.) and find criticism about it or works that follow it. Who criticized it/used it and why?
    • Understanding Primary Sources: Compare primary and secondary sources on the same topic. What is the difference between the primary and secondary sources on the topic? When and why do you each?
