Description
  • Students asked to compare the treatment of a controversial topic in several different types of resources.
Value
  • Students learn about the variety of types of resources available to the researcher.
  • Students are exposed to the various points of view, possible bias, and intended audience of particular resources.
Goals
  • Students are able to identify the intended audience of various sources of information, along with point of view and possible bias.
  • Students understand the value and appropriateness of various types of sources in their research.
Guidelines
  • Instructors should teach students about a variety of types of sources, such as: primary, secondary, and tertiary; scholarly, trade, and popular.
  • Guidelines should be established regarding types of sources to examine and what to look for within each source.
  • If possible, schedule a library instruction session to explore with students the best ways of finding these sources.
