Locating & Using Census Information

Census data at UMBC are shelved in several locations. Maryland and Washington D.C. data are located on the low shelves behind the Reference Desk, and an index of Census materials is available there as well. Census data for other states are located in the Government Publications area in the Reference Room. If you have questions, please see a Reference Librarian.

Census 2000 Summary File 3 (SF 3)

  • Summary File 3 presents detailed population and housing data (such as place of birth, education, employment status, income, value of housing unit, year structure built) collected from a 1-in-6 sample and weighted to represent the total population.
American Factfinder
  • Allows users to access data from the 2000 and 1990 Decennial Census, the 1997 Economic Census, and the American Community Survey. American FactFinder is a service of the U.S. Census Bureau.
Census Tract Relationship Files
  • As part of the Census 2000 geographic product series, the Census Bureau has produced Census Tract Relationship Files. (In previous censuses, this product was called a comparability file.) These files show how 1990 census tracts relate to Census 2000 census tracts. The files consist of one record per each 1990 census tract/2000 census tract spatial set. A spatial census tract set is defined as the area that is uniquely shared between a 1990 census tract and a 2000 census tract.
