Patapsco: Portrait of a Valley, Photographs by Peggy Fox

March 26 - May 23, 2001

Patapsco: Portrait of a Valley for which noted Baltimore photographer Peggy Fox produced a set of nearly 60 "environmental photographs" of the people-the elders--of the historic Patapsco Valley communities of Oella, Ellicott city, Relay, and Elkridge. The photographs are accompanied by oral histories compiled on each of the subjects by oral historian Alison Kahn.

A symposium on the subject of the Patapsco project in the context of cultural conservation will be held on April 11, at 4:00 p.m. in the Library Gallery. Speakers include: Edward Orser, American Studies Department, as moderator; Elaine Eff, Director, Cultural Conservation Program, Maryland Historical Trust; Peggy Fox, photographer; and Alison Kahn, oral historian and freelance writer. A public reception will follow immediately after the program.

The project and exhibition, organized by The Friends of Patapsco Valley & Heritage Greenway, Inc. was funded by the Maryland Historical Trust. The show also received major support from the Elkridge Furnace Inn and the Howard County Arts Council, as well as donations from The Framer's Vise and from FCNB Bank. Its presentation here at UMBC has been funded in partby support from the American Studies Department and the Special Sessions Policy Committee. Generous support has also come the Friends of the Library & Gallery and from an arts program grant from the Maryland State Arts Council, an agency funded by the State of Maryland and the National Endowment for the Arts.

Photographs from the exhibition, as well as other work by Peggy Fox, may be viewed at her online gallery
