Color Before Color: 100 Years of Painted Photographs in Original Frames 1844-1944

February 8 - April 10, 1999

Curated by Stanley and Sara Burns
From the Stanley B. Burns, M.D. collection

Photography satisfied the desire of the masses for immortality. The public, however, was not satisfied with bland monochrome pictures. This exhibition of 50 works, ranging from the daguerrotype to the modern silver print, documents the demand for photographs in color.

An illustrated catalog, Forgotten Marriage: the Painted Tintype & the Decorative Frame (Burns Press,1992), will accompany the exhibition and will be available for sale.
