Saving your work on library computers

Most programs save files to the My Documents folder unless you select another location. Files can be saved directly to:
  1. The computer desktop
  2. 3½ Floppy Diskette (A: drive)
  3. USB Flash Drive
  4. UMBC students can also save files to their personal disk space on the S: drive

After saving to the My Documents folder or to the computer desktop, files can be attached to an email or copied to:

  1. 3½ Floppy Diskette (A: drive)
  2. USB Flash Drive
  3. CD-R, CD-RW, or DVD-R
  4. UMBC students can also save files to their personal disk space on the S: drive

Copying to Diskette (A: drive)
Follow these steps to transfer files from the My Documents folder to your floppy diskette: My Computer
  1. Open the My Documents folder

  2. Right-click on your document icon and select 'copy'

  3. Open My Computer (double-click on the My Computer icon)

  4. Right-click on the 3½ Floppy (A:) drive and select 'paste'

Copying to USB Flash Drive

USB ports are available on all computers, but some ports work better than others. USB ports can be found:
  • On the front of the computer tower
  • On the back of the computer tower
  • On the side of the monitor (some flat panel monitors only)
  • On the back of the keyboard (some keyboards only)
After inserting your USB Flash Drive your drive should be available as Removable Disk (G:). Follow these steps to transfer your files from the My Documents folder to your USB Flash drive:
  1. Open the My Documents folder

  2. Right-click on your document icon and select 'copy'

  3. Open My Computer (double-click on the My Computer icon)

Copying to CD-R, CD-RW, or DVD-R

All library computers are equipped with CD-R/RW/DVD-R drives.
  • Burn CDs & DVDs with Roxio
    1. Select Start Menu > Programs > Roxio > Creator Home
      If asked, accept the license agreement

    2. Place your cursor over Make a Data CD:

Option 1: dataCD project
Create a CD (or DVD) that can be read on most computers - even in standard CD-ROM drives

  1. Select the 'Data' button on the left hand menu
  2. Data

  3. Select "Data Disc" by clicking the image in the main screen.

  4. Click the "Add Data" button and navigate to the files you wish to copy to your disc.

  5. Once you have added all of your files, click the big red button in the botton right corner to continue.

Saving files to the S: drive

Current UMBC students can save their work to their personal space on the S: drive
To find your S: drive:

  1. Open My Computer (double-click on the My Computer icon)

  2. The S: drive has the following path format:

    \afs\all\umbc.edu\users\1st letter of username\2nd letter of username\username

    Example:

      username = asmith1

      S: drive = \afs\all\umbc.edu\users\a\s\asmith1
I can't find my S: drive!
