Get books from other libraries

Request books using catalogusmai



Use this when you find books in catalogusmai. that aren't available at UMBC. You can request books that are checked out as well as books that UMBC does not own. Books that are not available in the catalog should be requested through Interlibrary Loan.

Note: Non-UMBC users must use Interlibrary Loan from their local public or institution library.

  1. Find the book you want using catalogusmai.

  2. Click on Find It next to the book title.

  3. Check availability at all USMAI campuses before placing your request - click Go (opens a new window).

    Find It Options

    Books that are listed as Non-Circulating (primarily Reference or Reserves), Lost, or In Process cannot be requested.
    Books that have been checked out may be requested.

  4. Return to the SFX Find It window

  5. Request item from another USMAI campus - click Go (requires log-in with 14-digit ID card number & last name).

  6. Select a pickup location (UMBC Library).

  7. Click send.

You will be notified by mail when your item is available. You can also log on to your Library Account to check the status of your request. Your may request your item at the Circulation Desk when the status states 'on hold until [date]'.




Request books using Interlibrary Loan

Use this to get books that aren't listed in catalogUSMAI.

Note: Books owned by other University System of Maryland (USMAI) campuses must be requested through catalogusmai.

  1. If you have not already done so, register for an Interlibrary Loan account (requires 14-digit ID card number & last name)

    Note: Non-UMBC users must use Interlibrary Loan from their local public or institution library.

  2. Find the book you want using the WorldCat catalog of over 9,000 libraries worldwide, or one of our other databases

  3. Click on Find It next to the book title.

  4. Request an item via Interlibrary Loan (ILL) - click Go (opens a new window).

  5. Log on to your Interlibrary Loan account

  6. The request form should be filled in automatically. Check for errors and click Submit Request
You will be notified by e-mail when your item is available. You can also check the status of your request by logging on to your Interlibrary Loan account. Journal articles are usually delivered electronically, books should be requested at the Circulation Desk.
