Using Databases

  • What is catalogusmai?
catalogusmai contains information about materials you can access through the Albin O. Kuhn Library and the other 15 libraries in the University System of Maryland and Affiliated Institutions (USMAI). You will find information about books, journals, DVDs, electronic resources and many other materials. You would search for a journal title (not an article) in catalogusmai to see what issues you can access. To search for a specific article in a journal you should use Research Port or a database.

  • What is Find It? Find It

From a record in catalogusmai the Find It button Find It can link you to full text (if available) or provide other options for access.

  • What is Research Port?
Research Port Tutorial [1:20] download Flash Player
Research Port is a gateway to electronic resources at UMBC, including article databases and electronic journals. Research Port is the preferred means of accessing these resources from off-campus.

  • Why do I get the message 'ID card invalid' when trying to use Research Port?
Make sure you have correctly entered all 14 digits from your UMBC ID card, and that you have selected UMBC as your campus. You can also find your Library ID in MyUMBC by clicking on your name at the top right-hand corner of the page – look for your 'Libraray ID'. If you still receive this error, you will need to contact the Circulation Department (Phone: 410-455-2354) to find out if there is a problem with your library account.

  • Where do I report problems with e-journals and databases?
Please report all problems with e-journals or article databases to the Reference Department.

  • Can I use the databases if I am not a current UMBC student?
Off-campus access to electronic resources is only available to current UMBC students, faculty and staff. All other users must come to the library to use these resources. Visitors must show a photo ID at either the Reference Desk or the Circulation Desk to request a Guest Account in order to use the library computers.
