Job Descriptions - Student Assistants

UNIT: COLLECTION MANAGEMENT/INTERLIBRARY LOAN - STUDENT ASSISTANT

Purpose: General assistance to the unit

Reports to: Unit Staff

Duties include: Student assistants in Collection Management/Interlibrary Loan department have a large variety of responsibilities. A thorough understanding of the stacks and a general knowledge of several departments are important to accomplishing their tasks. All students are trained to work in the three areas of CM/ILL. Although they are assigned to specific tasks, where they actually work depends on their schedule and need.

CM/ILL:

  1. Answer telephones and take messages.
  2. Search catalogusmai
  3. Use photocopier.
  4. Other duties as assigned.

Interlibrary Loan Lending:

  1. Retrieve journals & books from stacks.
  2. Photocopy articles from journals.
  3. Charge and discharge books.
  4. Process books and journal articles for outgoing mail.
  5. Process "hand carry" requests.
  6. Use microfilm readers.
  7. Other duties as assigned.

Interlibrary Loan Borrowing:

  1. Check serials directory for OCLC and ISSN numbers of journals.
  2. Match original ILL request form with computer printout.
  3. Sort incoming mail and MILO delivery.
  4. Process incoming articles and books for delivery to patrons.
  5. Send notices to patrons.
  6. Other duties as assigned.

Collection Management:

  1. Assist with the pick-up of gifts on and off campus.
  2. Assist with booksale.
  3. Assist with packing and unpacking of gifts.
  4. Assist with manual labor jobs.
  5. Other duties as assigned.
Skills: Students must be detail oriented and self motivated; must be able to shelve books at heights of 0"-90", push loaded booktrucks, and lift boxes weighing up to 40 lbs.

Schedule: Should be able to work a set schedule of at least 10 hours per week. A shift should consist of at least 2 hours between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. on Monday through Friday.

Pay Scale: Entry Level
