Job Descriptions - Student Assistants

UNIT: CIRCULATION - CIRCULATION SERVICES STUDENT

Purpose: Search for missing items, routing Circulation tasks

Reports to Stacks Manager

Duties include:

  1. Shelve books in strict Library of Congress order.
  2. Sort books and arrange book trucks in strict Library of Congress order.
  3. Retrieve, return and reshelve Reserve requests.
  4. Charge out books, retrieve holds, return books, and accept payment for fines.
  5. Check user's library circulation records.
  6. Answer questions regarding library holdings and library policy.
  7. Other duties as assigned.
Skills: Shelve heavy books, push booktrucks, shelve materials at various heights.

Schedule: Minimum of 10 hours per week. Scheduling can be flexible.

UNIT: CIRCULATION - CIRCULATION SERVICES STUDENT/SEARCH ASSISTANT

Reports to Stacks Manager

Duties include:

  1. Shelve books in strict Library of Congress order.
  2. Sorting books and arranging book carts in strict Library of Congress order.
  3. Shelfreading (verifying that the books are shelved in struct call number order) assigned sections of the collection
  4. Shifting books in the stacks to adjust for the growth of the collection.
  5. Register UMBC faculty, staff and students in the Aleph system, register Special Borrowers in the Aleph system and edit the records as needed.
  6. Charge out books, retrieve holds, and return books.
  7. Retrieve, charge, return and reshelve Reserve material.
  8. Inquire into a patron's record.
  9. Accept payment for fines, lost book fees and special Borrower privileges.
  10. Answer questions regarding library holdings and library policy.
  11. Troubleshoot copiers and printers in the 1st floor copy room.
  12. Assist Circulation Department staff with special projects as needed
In addition to these core duties, a Circulation Services Student/Search Assistant will be expected to:
  1. Search and retrieve, on a daily basis, items Reported Missing by faculty, staff and students and those items not found during Holds searches.
  2. Search and retrieve, on a daily basis, items Claimed Returned by faculty, staff and students of UMBC as well as other USMAI libraries.
  3. Search and retrieve, on a daily basis, items on the BC Lost Items list.
  4. Maintain statistics of search results.
Skills: Students should have the ability to work without close supervision and do repetitive work without losing concentration. The ability to remain calm and courteous yet firm when dealing with a problem is necessary. It is essential that the Search Assistant has a thorough understanding of all aspects of LIbrary of Congress Call Number order. Initiative, dependability and the ability to think along constructive original lines are also criticala traits in the Search Assistant. Technical training (Library of Congress Classification System, Aleph, etc.) will be provided after employment.

Schedule: Student should be available to work a minimum of 10 hours per week. Scheduling can be flexible since the Circulation Department is open all hours the library is open.

UNIT: CIRCULATION - STUDENT ASSISTANT: HOLDS/ROUTER (SHIPPING)

Purpose: Process UMBC book loans to other UMS campuses

Reports to: Holds/Router Coordinator

Duties include:

  1. Search and retrieve books, government documents, and compact discs.
  2. Process items for shipment on the circulation terminal.
  3. Sort items to be routed by school code.
  4. Pack, label, and prepare each box for shipment to the appropriate school.
  5. May be asked to help with shelving duties such as sorting and/or arranging book trucks.
  6. Other duties as assigned.
Skills: Good organizational and time management skills are necessary. Must be able to work efficiently without direct supervision. Must be able to lift boxes containing books and work with packing material. Knowledge of Library of Congress Classification System and general word processing skills are helpful.

Schedule: Work Monday through Friday for a minimum of 10 hours a week. Students who are available during the mornings are preferred.

UNIT: CIRCULATION - STUDENT ASSISTANT: CIRCULATION SERVICES LEAD STUDENT

Purpose: Library opening/closing; routine circulation tasks

Reports to: Stacks Manager

Duties include:

  1. Shelve books in strict Library of Congress order.
  2. Sort books and arrange book trucks in strict Library of Congress order.
  3. Retrieve, return and reshelve Reserve requests.
  4. Charge out books, retrieve holds, return books, and accept payment for fines.
  5. Inquire into a patron's record.
  6. Answer questions regarding library holdings and library policy.
  7. Train and supervise students as needed.
  8. Open and/or close the department as needed.
  9. Other duties as assigned.
Skills: Students should have the ability to work without close supervision and to do repetitive work without losing concentration. It is essential that the student have the ability to lead by example and to encourage other students to excel. A willingness to learn new procedures and to take on added responsibilities are also critical traits in a Lead Student. Technical training ( Library of Congress Classification System, CARL, etc) will be provided after employment.

Schedule: Work a minimum of 10 hours per week. Scheduling can be flexible.

UNIT: CIRCULATION - POSITION DESCRIPTION: SHELVING STUDENT

Purpose: Reshelve books and materials

Reports to: Stacks Manager

Duties include:

  1. Shelve books in strict Library of Congress order.
  2. Sort books and arranging book trucks in strict Library of Congress order.
  3. Other duties as assigned.
Skills: Should have the ability to work without close supervision and to do repetitive work without losing concentration. Training in the Library of Congress Classification System will be provided . Must be able to lift books, push loaded booktrucks and shelve materials at heights of 0"-90".

Schedule: Minimum of 10 hours per week. Scheduling can be flexible.

UNIT: CIRCULATION - SECURITY STUDENT

Purpose: Monitors entrance/exit of Library. Answers routine questions

Reports to: Stacks Manager

Duties include:

  1. Monitors the entrance and exit of the library and responds to gate alarms.
  2. Patrols the building and completes log as instructed.
  3. Responds to security issues and alarms; completes incident reports as necessary.
  4. Responds to routine inquiries from staff, students and visitors.
  5. Alerts Circulation staff member on duty to any security issues needing further attention.
  6. May be requested to help with shelving duties (i.e. sorting and/or arranging book trucks).
  7. Other duties as assigned.
Skills: Students should have the ability to work without close supervision. The ability to remain calm and courteous yet firm when dealing with a problem is necessary. technical training (alarm systems, etc.) will be provided after employment.

Schedule: Should be available to work a minimum of 10 hours per week. Scheduling can be flexible since the Security Desk should be covered all of the hours the Library is open.
