Job Descriptions - Student Assistants

UNIT: ACQUISITIONS

Purpose: To help in all phases of the book ordering and receiving process.

Reports to: Library Acquisitions staff

Duties include:

  1. Log in book requests from various campus departments.
  2. Searching the library's online catalog to make sure we do not already own the item.
  3. search various vendor databases to determine an item's availability. Some examples are, but not limited to, collection Manager (our primary vendor), Barnes and Noble and amazon.com.
  4. Create order records in the library system.
  5. Prepare purchase orders for mailing.
  6. Returning slips to department and/or requestors notifying them of the status of their orders.
  7. Other duties as assigned.
More Complex duties, at an increased pay rate, are available for the more advanced student. Some examples of this kind of work are:
  1. Order follow-up - resolving old orders that have never been filled;
  2. Publisher/Vendor inquiries - finding information about an item;
  3. Special ordering - purchasing scores, dvds, dcs, etc.
Skills: Student workers in this position will need to have excellent organizational skills and be detail-oriented. Familiarity with the online system is a plus, but not mandatory.

Schedule: Students in this position generally work between 10 and 15 hours a week between the hours of 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Monday - Friday.
