Archivist

We seek a motivated, dynamic, and talented archivist to manage the archives program in our Special Collections. The successful candidate will be committed to and creative in planning, organizing, and carrying out archival activities related to irreplaceable documents of the University, scientific organizations, and individuals for which UMBC is the designated archival repository. The archivist will assist students, faculty, University officials, and researchers in the use and interpretation of archival collections.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
Working in a collegial environment, the archivist will arrange and describe archival collections, maintain archives databases, and participate in the acquisition, processing, preservation, digitization, promotion, and use of the Special Collections archival holdings. In addition, the archivist will be responsible for preparation of finding aids and assist Special Collections patrons on the department service desk including one to two Thursday nights per month (during the academic year) in rotation with other staff members. As part of the Library & Gallery community, the archivist will contribute to the development, management, and promotion of digital projects, including the continued implementation of CONTENTdm and PastPerfect. The archivist will provide reference services for internal and external requests, contribute to grant writing and grant projects, contribute to special displays of archival materials, and supervise graduate and undergraduate student assistants.

REQUIREMENTS:
ALA accredited Master’s degree in Library Science with concentration in special collections work. Graduate coursework in archival techniques and archival administration required. At least one year of experience in archives work is preferred. Familiarity with EAD and authoring tools such as XML and HTML is preferred as well as knowledge of preservation procedures. Demonstrated ability in the area of public services as well as demonstrated analytical, organizational, and interpersonal abilities, and excellent oral and written communication skills; demonstrated expertise working in a Windows-based environment; evidence of both professional initiative and flexibility, including the ability to work effectively and collegially with a large and diverse population of faculty, students, and staff; ability to work independently and in a team-based environment.

Position is a 12-month library faculty appointment at anticipated rank of Librarian I. Rank and salary will be commensurate with qualifications. Minimum salary: $46,000. Comprehensive benefits. Reference and Instruction Librarian

We seek a motivated, dynamic librarian to provide a wide range of instructional and reference services to support the University community. The successful candidate will provide reference assistance to students, faculty and other library patrons (including shared evening and weekend hours). The reference librarian will also act as liaison to select academic departments and will help support the Library’s information literacy initiatives.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
Participate as a member of the reference department of seven faculty librarians and one support staff to provide general reference service to the campus community; offer course-integrated and individual instruction sessions as a subject librarian for faculty, staff, and students; participate in ongoing outreach to faculty regarding library resources and services; and assist with certain aspects of the Library’s information literacy program.

REQUIREMENTS:
ALA accredited Master’s degree in Library Science. Demonstrated ability in the area of public services and the use of library reference technologies; demonstrated analytical, organizational, and interpersonal abilities, and excellent oral and written communication skills; demonstrated expertise working in a Windows-based environment, especially productivity software, communication packages, and Web page development; demonstrated ability to instruct users in print and electronic reference sources; evidence of both professional initiative and flexibility, including the ability to work effectively and collegially with a large and diverse population of faculty, students, and staff; ability to work independently and in a team-based environment.

Reference and instruction experience in an academic setting preferred. Demonstrated knowledge of social science statistical packages and software, such as SPSS, desired.

Science Reference and Instruction Librarian (Science and Engineering)

We seek an experienced librarian to provide reference and research assistance primarily in the sciences and engineering. The successful candidate will act as a liaison to several academic departments that may include physics, the biological sciences, engineering, and geography and environmental systems. The successful candidate is expected to provide a wide range of reference services and support to the faculty, staff and students of selected departments including instruction and information literacy, reference services (including shared evening and weekend hours), and working with faculty to improve services and information literacy development of students on campus.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
Participate as a member of the reference department of seven faculty librarians and one support staff to provide general reference service to the campus community; offer course-integrated and individual instruction sessions as subject librarian for faculty, staff, and students in the sciences and engineering; participate in ongoing outreach to sciences and engineering faculty regarding library resources and services; and serve as a member of the Information Literacy Work Group in planning, developing, implementing, and evaluating a comprehensive instruction program.

REQUIREMENTS:
ALA accredited Master’s degree in Library Science. Demonstrated knowledge of science librarianship; strong science background; demonstrated knowledge of and strong interest in current trends in library instruction and information literacy as it relates to the sciences and engineering; demonstrated analytical, organizational, interpersonal, and excellent oral and written communication skills; demonstrated expertise working in a Windows-based environment, especially productivity software, communication packages, and Web page development; demonstrated ability to instruct users in print and electronic reference sources; evidence of both professional initiative and flexibility, including the ability to work effectively and collegially with a large and diverse population of faculty, students, and staff; ability to work independently and in a team-based environment.

An undergraduate degree or second master’s degree in the sciences or engineering is preferred. Reference and instruction experience in an academic setting preferred. Academic library experience with science or engineering emphasis or equivalent corporate experience in science or engineering is highly desirable.
