Fine and Lost Item Information

Effective April 1, 2008
  • Book Fines: 50 cents per day per item to a maximum of $50.00 per item
  • Media Fines: $2 a day with a maximum of $50.00 per item.
  • Overdue Recalled Item Fines: $4.00 per day, per item; continues to $50.00 maximum per item
  • Reserve Fines:
    • 1 Hour, 2 Hour, 3 Hour, and 7 Hour Reserves: $3.00 each hour per item; Maximum $50.00 per item
    • 1 Day, 2 Day, 3 Day, and 7 Day Reserves: $5.00 per day per item; Maximum $50.00 per item
  • Lost Books: $100.00 replacement fee, $35.00 processing fee
  • Lost CDs: $100.00 replacement fee, $35.00 processing fee
  • Lost DVDs: $150.00 replacement fee, $35.00 processing fee
  • Replacement copies of lost items are only accepted with special permission from the Collection Management Librarian: Robin Moskal, 410-455-3812
  • If an item you have already returned remains on your library account, a "Claims Returned" can be filed at the Circulation Desk. Claims Returned Procedure

Notices Received from the Library


Fine Notice: Fees can be paid in person at the Circulation Desk, or can be paid by check by mail (see address below). Fees can be paid only by Campus Card or check; we are not able to accept cash.

Lost Book Notice: If the item is returned you will only need to pay late fines. See Fine Notice for payment information.

Bill Transfer Notice: When a fine or fee is not paid to the library within 30 days, it is sent to the University Bursar's Office and is no longer payable in the library.

Please note that efforts will be made by email and postal mail to contact patrons concerning outstanding fees; however, it is the patron's responsibility to ensure that the library has accurate contact information on file. The library cannot be held responsible if notices are not received. Updates to contact information may be made at the Circulation desk.

Payment of Fees

Library fees are payable at the Circulation Desk for up to 30 days after the original billing date. These payments can be made in person at the library or a check can be mailed to:

After 30 days, amounts owed to the Library are transferred to the UMBC Bursar's Office and an additional $5.00 service charge is assessed at that time. These payments can be made in person to the Cashier (3rd Floor, Administration) or a check can be mailed to:
