Library Cards

UMBC Students, Faculty & Staff

You will need a valid UMBC Campus ID card to borrow material from the library. UMBC students, faculty and staff should present their cards to a staff member at the Circulation Desk to register for library privileges. After you are registered, you may also borrow material from any USMAI library or library that allows reciprocal borrowing. Students must update their library registration in September of each year or else their privileges will expire. Faculty and staff are typically given two years until their library registration must be updated.

See USMAI and Reciprocal Borrowing for further information regarding institutions that UMBC has borrowing agreements with.

Special Borrowers

Those not covered under USMAI or reciprocal borrowing agreements can obtain a Special Borrowers Card for an annual fee of $30.00. Come to the Circulation Desk with a current driver's license or other valid photo ID with proof of current address. All USMAI alumni that have current borrowing privileges at their home campus also have borrowing privileges at UMBC. UMBC Alumni should first obtain a UMBC Alumni Card from the Alumni Relations Office then register at the Library Circulation Desk - a one time fee of $15.00 will be charged for the cost of the card. High school students are on occasion granted borrowing privileges for an annual fee of $2.00. All special borrower fees must be paid in full at the time of registration. Payment methods include check or campus card. See Library guideline 256 - Special Borrower Privileges, for full details of the policy.

Policy on Granting Borrowing Privileges for High School Students

High school teachers may arrange for their students to have borrowing privileges by placing a request in writing or by phone to the Circulation Operations Manager. For group visits, the Circulation department must receive registration forms, signed by both the student and parent, 8 working days prior to the visit. In addition, there is a $2.00 charge for each library card issued. The total amount for the cost of the cards should be remitted with the Registration forms on ONE CHECK, made payable to UMBC.

Please allow plenty of time for these procedures. Borrowing privileges cannot be guaranteed for a group if Registration forms are not received in the time period specified.

On a case by case basis, borrowing privileges may also be extended to high school students needing to borrow UMBC Library materials. To qualify, the student must have proof of current high school enrollment using either a valid high school ID card or a letter on school stationery showing proof of enrollment. The student must also complete the Library's High School Registration Form and the registration form must be signed by a parent or guardian for all students under 18 years of age. There is a $2.00 charge for the cost of the library card.
